It’s no secret that summer is a time to let loose and enjoy ourselves, but some of us tend to enjoy ourselves a tad too much, which in turn can lead to weight gain, a drop in our fitness levels and even a weaker immune system. To remedy this, here are some tips to help you stay healthy over the summer while still having loads of fun!
1. Drink Water – Lots of It
We all know that we should be getting our 8 glasses a day, but in the summer when the temperature goes up, getting enough water becomes even more important for our health. Staying hydrated is a must during hot days or days when we’re out and about and being more active than usual. Dehydration can cause headaches, nausea, dizziness, and even death in extreme cases. So drink up!
2. Take Advantage of Seasonal Fruits and Veggies
Summer gives us a great variety of delicious fruits and veggies to choose from that make ideal summer treats for beach days and BBQs. Not only are fruits and vegetables going to help keep your immune system strong, but they also provide you with extra water to help keep you hydrated. Enjoy strawberries in smoothies or even dipped in some dark chocolate! Watermelon is always a refreshing treat. Experiment with different veggies and even fruits in salads—they’re a great addition to any picnic or BBQ.
3. Get Out There and Enjoy All Summer Has to Offer On Foot
What better time to walk than during your summer vacay? Take advantage of the warm weather and beautiful sun to get out and explore your town or even a new town on foot. It’s great exercise and a free and enjoyable way to keep your weight in check, your heart pumping, and to get your much-needed vitamin D while you’re at it.
4. Get in the Water
You don’t need to swim laps in order to get a good workout in the water. As a matter of fact, doing anything from walking in the water to frolicking like a kid can help get you get a great workout while having loads of good summer fun at the same time! Water provides a natural resistance which makes moving in the water a little more taxing even though you may feel weightless. This in turn leads to working harder to move about which burns more calories and helps to build strength, all while having fun.
5. Protect Your Skin
Summer vacation isn’t just a time for fun, for many it’s also a time for sunburns and dry skin. To keep your skin safe this summer be sure to apply a good sunscreen regularly, even if you’re just out running errands. Keep your skin moisturized to help keep it from drying out and don’t forget to stay hydrated!
Use these tips to stay healthy over summer vacation so that you can enjoy this summer, and many others, for years to come!
