Bizarre celebrity parenting

Bizarre celebrity parenting

For some Hollywood stars, being famous isn’t enough for them. Some have to be cutting edge and throw in a bit of controversy at the same time. They certainly don’t seem to tone it down once they have kids. We used to gasp at some of the names these larger than life people chose for their kids. But making fun of Apple, Honeyblossom, Banjo, and Saffron Sahara is so passé. Over time most of us became pretty inured to their bizarre name choices.

But who knows, maybe those of us who are mere mortals have it all wrong and we are judging them too harshly. Maybe we should be taking parenting queues from them. Here are a few examples, I’ll let you be the judge.

Alicia Silverstone

Do you still cut your baby’s food into manageable bite size pieces? Well, while you were cutting away, you must have missed the latest YouTube video called, “Silverstoning,” which stars Clueless actress Alicia Silverstone. Taking parenting tips from birds, Silverstone chews up food in her own mouth and then passes it to her baby Bear Blu (no, that’s actually his name).

Hilary Duff

Against her retired hockey player hubby Mike Comrie’s better judgment, actress Hilary Duff decided to keep a neat little souvenir from her son, Luca Cruz’s birth. No, it isn’t the baby announcement or his receiving blanket. Hilary is saving little Luca’s umbilical cord stump in a Ziploc bag. It’s “hidden” in her make-up drawer. I am guessing she never shares her make-up with anyone.

Mayim Bialik

Believing in home-birthing, diaperless potty training, sleeping with their children and breast- feeding them until they decide it’s time to wean themselves is actress Mayim Bialik and her husband. The former Blossom star turned PhD neuroscientist believes so strongly in these controversial child raising methods, she wrote a book, called “Beyond the Sling: A Real-Life Guide to Raising Confident, Loving Children the Attachment Parenting Way.”

Katie Holmes

Many fans of Katie Holmes worried she would go off the deep end and become consumed by former teen heartthrob and Scientologist Tom Cruise once they got married. You can stop worrying; the once perky, outspoken and talented actress doesn’t take parenting queues from Tom but rather from their daughter Suri. Believing that all of us are billions of years old, Scientologists advocate that parents treat their children like they are adults from day one. This goes well beyond choosing the purple leggings over the floral ones. If Suri doesn’t want to wear a coat in the winter, wants to match her pacifier with her heels, or she wants to eat cookies all day, it’s her prerogative. After all, she is an adult trapped in a 6-year old’s body.

January Jones

It’s tough for actresses to give birth. For nine months they get to be normal and give in to their cravings. But come delivery day, the clock is already ticking for them to lose the baby weight fast so they can get back to work. Relying on a personal trainer is so yesterday! January Jones opted instead to eat pills derived from her own placenta. Swearing it aids in breast milk production, replenishes lost nutrients in the body and ease postpartum depression.

Angelina Jolie

Fetish for blood? It’s possible. When she was married to Billy Bob Thornton, they wore vials of one another’s blood around their necks. Remembering that piece of trivia, it might not seem so odd now that she is one half of Brangelina, that she and Pitt save their kids’ used bloody band-aids in a jar. Some people like to decorate their homes with van Gogh, Monet and Frida Kahlo. Who’s to say that jars of bloody bandages isn’t artsy?

Until next time,

Peace, love and vitamin C!
