The problem of today is how to filter through all we know about concussions and determine what and who we should listen to when it comes to the health of our brains.

When dealing with a concussion, whether it is from a sport injury, a motor vehicle accident or any other head injury, the importance of being properly assessed and rehabilitated is no longer questioned. The problem of today is how to filter through all we know about concussions and determine what and who we should listen to when it comes to the health of our brains. Our knowledge is constantly changing and every day new research changes the face of concussion treatment.

At most concussion centers they will assess and treat concussions using the Shift Concussion Management Program (shiftconcussion.ca). Our initial assessment consists of a neurocognitive computer based test (ImPACT), an assessment of your vestibular and occulomotor systems, a balance and gait assessment and a musculoskeletal assessment of your neck. We use the information from this assessment to help guide you through the stages of concussion treatment: rest, gradual return to daily activities, return to work and school and a 5 staged return to sport/physical exertion as well as help you treat and manage the many symptoms you may be experiencing. Through this protocol we can successfully help you get back to your normal life and ensure you are not left with lingering problems that could affect your function well into the future.
