Looking for a fitness centre in Calgary? Here are some tips to help you find the right one

You probably already know that getting in shape is one of the best things you can do for your health. Regular exercise can help you control your weight, improve your cardiovascular health, build stronger bones, keep your muscles developed and even prevent diseases like Type II diabetes. But getting started can be daunting if you haven’t exercised before.

One of the best ways to start exercising is to join a local fitness centre or gym and get started on a comprehensive exercise program. At the same time, there are lots of fitness centres around, which makes choosing the right one a bit tricky. Here are a few tips to help you get started finding the perfect fitness centre that meets your needs.

Start by listing your requirements in a fitness centre, which can include:

  • Location
  • Hours of service
  • Fees
  • Types of services offered (i.e.  personal trainers? Exercise equipment? Classes? Child care?)

Once you’ve listed your needs, ask your family, friends, co-workers, family doctor or other health care practitioners if they can recommend a good gym. Next, try doing an Internet search on Health Local to find a fitness centre in your area. The centre’s listing will have information (including website links) to help you determine if it meets your requirements.

Finally, make a list of all the gyms that appeal to you and give them a call. Make an appointment to go in for a tour and bring with you a list of questions. You might want to ask them the following:

  • Is there a contract I have to sign?
  • What kind of notice do I have to give if I want to leave?
  • How old is your equipment?
  • How often do you get new equipment?
  • What happens if I get hurt using the equipment?
  • Is there supervision to help me if I have a question?
  • What certifications do your staff members have?

Once you’ve found the fitness centre that fits your needs, budget and schedule, you’ll know you’ve made the right choice. Now comes the really hard part – making sure you go regularly!
