The word “chiropractic” comes from ancient Greek and means “done by hand.” Adjustment of the joints of the body has been used in the healing arts for many centuries and is at the heart of modern chiropractic care.
Chiropractors are specialists in manual adjustment of the vertebrae of the spine and other joints of the body. Adjustment helps relieve pain and restore normal functioning to the joints and supporting muscles and ligaments – so you can enjoy your everyday activities again as quickly as possible.
Your chiropractor will recommend a course of treatment specific to you that may also include mobilization of the joints, ultrasound, muscle release techniques, muscle stimulation and therapeutic exercises. Chiropractors are also trained to provide nutritional counselling, and recommend rehabilitation and injury prevention strategies.
The body’s information highway – your nervous system – is protected by the spine. The nervous system travels out between the vertebrae or joints of the spine to carry messages from the brain to every corner of your body. Stress and strain on the vertebrae can put pressure on the nerves in the affected area. That is why a problem with your spine can have far-reaching effects causing symptoms such as arm or leg pain.
When to consider chiropractic care
If aching joints and muscle pain are affecting your ability to get through the day and keeping you away from your favourite activities, consider chiropractic care. Work, accidents, sports injuries, household chores, even the stress of daily living can cause painful joint and back problems. Even if you do not have painful symptoms, chiropractic care can help you maintain healthy spine and joint function.

Acupuncture is an effective form of medical treatment that has existed for more than 2000 years. Nowadays, it has become one of the most popular forms of healing. It is an ancient Chinese technique which uses fine needles. These needles are inserted at specific points through the body to balance and stimulate Qi (energy).
During the initial consultation a full health history is taken along with an appropriate physical exam including pulse and tongue diagnosis. This enables the practitioner to effectively diagnose and detect any specific imbalances of Qi that may have contributed to a person’s health problems. An acupuncturist will then insert fine, sterile needles at specific acupoints along meridian pathways. This will unblock the obstruction and balance Qi where it has become unbalanced. Qi can then freely circulate throughout the body, providing adequate nourishment to cells, organs, glands, tissues and muscles. This can eliminate pain and restore balance and harmony -ultimately leading to optimal health and well-being.
Massage therapy has been practiced for centuries in various therapeutic arenas. A friendly human touch is believed to be important to psychological as well as physical health. Pictures of massage treatments are etched in Egyptian tombs. The eastern cultures are notorious for their alternative therapies, one of which is massage.Several cultures have developed their own distinctive branches of bodywork, such as lomi lomi in Hawaii and Shiatsu in Japan, and one of the pillars of Indian Ayurveda (the traditional Indian medicine) is massage. Bodywork is often integrated into a greater holistic healing practice, like Traditional Chinese Medicine. Many people around the world consider massage as an important part of their personal health and beauty regimen.
It is no wonder that massage therapy is globally embraced as there are countless pros and few cons. The most common benefits of massage therapy are pain reduction, increased range of motion, clarity of mind, balance and homeostasis, increased energy and vitality, anxiety and stress relief and sense of being nurtured and cared for. Now, who wouldn’t embrace those things?
The most frequent conditions treated are neck, shoulder and back pain. The discomfort is typically due to activities of daily living and is effectively eliminated while strategies to prevent future discomfort are outlined. Pathologies commonly seen include whiplash, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis and golfer’s elbow, plantar fasciitis, headaches, insomnia, chronic fatigue syndrome, strokes, and scoliosis.
Custom orthotics look like insoles, but are biomechanical medical devices that are custom made to correct your specific foot imbalance. Orthotics work on your feet much like glasses work on your eyes- they reduce stress and strain on your body by bringing your feet back into proper alignment.
Specifically, orthotics work by increasing the time that the foot pronates. If you remember physics class....force equals mass times acceleration (F=ma) and acceleration equals distance over time (A=D/t). To reduce the force applied to the foot we must decrease acceleration. It is really hard to decrease the mass in this equation because losing weight is harder than it sounds. Anyone who has tried to lose weight knows what I am talking about. Orthotics decrease acceleration by increasing the time not decreasing the distance. The distance that the foot naturally pronates is maintained by flexibility of the orthotic. What the orthotic does in essence is mimic the major arches of the foot which act as shock absorbers by increasing the time of pronation thereby decreasing acceleration.
And it is for this reason why most chiropractors use semi-rigid/flexible orthotics.
