Tooth Whitening or Bleaching is a very popular and effective way of drastically improving a smile! The Canadian Dental Association states that tooth bleaching is a generally safe and effective method to improve tooth esthetics, provided it is undertaken under a dentist's supervision and according to the manufacturers directions.
Many products promise whiter teeth: Whitening toothpastes do not bleach teeth but use mild abrasives and polishing agents which can remove surface stains. Whitening strips are available over the counter and contain a mild bleaching agent which can be moderately effective over an extended period of time. Bleaching trays can be either custom formed or over the counter. Professional trays contain a stronger concentration of bleach and are fitted to optimize tooth exposure. In Office Bleaching provides the fastest and most consistent results. Our office utilizes both the custom tray and in office, light activated bleaching.
Not all patient's are suitable candidates for bleaching. An examination and cleaning are recommended prior to undertaking bleaching. Results will vary based on the cause of discoloration. It is also important to note that existing restorations, fillings and crowns or bridges do not bleach. Tooth sensitivity may also result from bleaching.
Teeth discoloration may be due to either intrinsic or extrinsic causes. Intrinsic causes are often the result
of pulpa trauma, high levels of fluoride, tetracycline administration during childhood, jaundice in childhood and cavities. Extrinsic staining is mostly from dietary factors : red wine, coffee, tea, carotenes in oranges and carrots and tobacco use. Teeth will also gradually discolor as one ages, from the wearing of the tooth structure or as a consequence of pulpal inflammation. Discoloration due to aging responds much better to bleaching than does discoloration due to tetracylcline.
Patients with generalized gingival recession may experience significant sensitivity. Younger patient's have more porous enamel and wider dentinal tubules. This can also result in greater sensitivity. Old, leaking restorations may allow the solution to irritate the pulp. Should it occur, sensitivity may persist for up to four days after the cessation of bleaching.
Ewart Dental offers Zoom and Sapphire in-office advanced bleaching techniques; creating significant results in just one hour.
We pride ourselves on creating lifelong dental fans! Our approach is a positive and gentle one, involving the child, the family and the dental team. We create a supportive and fun environment to foster your child's life long dental health.
We discuss, explain, demonstrate and teach; never lecture. Humour, patience and a great sense of fun are our biggest tools. (That and a great toy/prize box for our young patients.)
Typically, children are seen for a first visit at 2 1/2 to 3 years of age. If a parent has any concerns prior to that, we are very happy to arrange an appointment. The first visit is typically a (no charge) orientation, where a child has a tour of the office, a "ride" in the dental chair and gets to meet the hygienist and Dr. Ewart. We will spend time to discuss your child's dental health and address any concerns or questions that you might have. Introducing a child to the office prior to any dental concerns/issues arising is a crucial step in creating a trusting, comfortable environment for your child.
Our office building boasts a lovely atrium with fish, turtles and tropical plants. Our office has a great children's play area with video games and toys. Children love coming to our office and we love seeing them!
