From teenagers in high school to seniors enjoying leisure travel, everyone is concerned with how their smile is seen by others, besides the fact that everyone wants to eat hard and cold foods without a problem. Cosmetic Dentistry is that branch of dentistry that deals with the appearance of teeth and their health and function in an individual.
Regardless of age, a good healthy smile with clean white teeth and pink gums is a prerequisite for social life, and definitely a requirement for acceptable social appearance in society. It can go a long way in telling everyone that you care for yourself and your confidence shows through your smile.
Not everyone is born lucky in this regard, and often a lack of self-esteem can arise if a person avoids talking in public or smiling because he or she is embarassed by yellow teeth, smoking stains, chipped or crooked teeth and unsightly gaps. This can lead to a diminished social status if steps are not taken in time.
Replacing old worn-out and leaking silver mercury amalgam fillings is done at our office on a routine basis now. We do not place any silver mercury fillings in this office as this is a mercury-free practice. It is almost univerally agreed that the modern nano-technology composite fillings (bonding) are very durable and much more aesthetic than composites of the previous generation.
Not only do they last longer than an average silver filling, they also do not contain toxic mercury or compounds thereof. The composite fillings do not need a lot of tooth-structure removal as they can be bonded to the healthy tooth structure, and hence are more ‘conservative’. Since all the direct composites are hardened in the mouth using a blue spectrum light, they can be polished to a gloss at the same appointment as well. A second appointment is not required.
In our opinion, direct bonding of composites to tooth sructure is the greatest revolution in modern dentistry, which although many decades old, has only in recent years found universal perfection. We use the latest nanotechnology composites for fillings on all teeth, front and back, and the results show very well, besides being a long-lasting investment for the patient.
Modern dental implants have been around for more than 55 years, and have become one of the safest and most predicable replacements for missing teeth, and maintenance of bone. In the past, lost teeth could only be replaced using a fixed bridge or a removable partial denture; both procedures having their own merits and demerits. A dental implant occupies the same space in the jawbone as the root of the natural tooth, hence is non-traumatic to adjacent teeth, and does not need to be removed at bedtime either! The jawbone does not shrink either when an implant is placed in the bone. Within 3-5 months, the bone becomes completely fused with the Titanium alloy of the implant screw, and is ready for a custom crown that goes over it.
Pain. Swelling. Bleeding. Broken tooth, broken denture. If you have any of the above in your mouth, then it is a dental emergency, and we can help. Usually on the same day. Even if you are not a registered patient of our office. We provide emergency dental care during office hours to patients from Mississauga, Oakville, Etobicoke, Brampton and even visiting tourists.
Of the non-invasive gum treatments, scaling and root-planing [SRP] are the most common treatments provided at Applewood Village Dentistry in Mississauga. The vast majority of patients need scaling and root planing to various degrees to maintain optimal oral health, and nothing more. These treatments are also the most common treatments covered by your dental insurance benefits plan. During scaling, and ultrasonic piezotronic advanced scaling machine is used to gently dislodge the tartar and calculus that forms around the gumline for most people. The machine also has a water spray that carries away all the debris, leaving the tooth surface clean and free of stains. Root planing is usually done by hand using instruments called scalers/curettes and is used to smooth the exposed root surfaces so the gums attach well to these areas. Most such appointments are needed on a regular basis to prevent the accumulation of plaque and calculus, which otherwise would cause the gum and bone support to slowly erode away, ultimately causing severe loosening and loss of teeth. Our hygienists are trained and experienced and can deliver a squeeky clean mouth in less than an hour!
Most patients that have natural teeth will need routine maintenance and care. Despite your best home care efforts, you cannot prevent the regular build up of tartar and stains and plaque on the surface of your teeth and exposed roots. This must be periodically removed to maintain your chewing apparatus in smooth function, and prevent teeth from weakening. We use piezotronic ultrasonic and manual scalers to provide you with a completely clean mouth. Our ultrasonic scaling equipment is of the low-vibration piezotronic variety that causes no discomfort or sensitivity. At the end of a cleaning appointment, the dentist gives you a quick but thorough exam to check for cavities, gum problems, jaw joint issues, cracked teeth, etc. A pleasant-tasting fluoride application is also made at this time to make your teeth stronger and more resistant to decay.
Usually 2 appointments are needed. In the first appointment, (under adequate local anesthesia), the abscessed tooth is opened and the infected pulp (nerve) is completely removed. The inside of the canal space is cleaned, disinfected and an antiseptic is packed in, with a temporary filling on top. Most patients feel miraculously better after the first sitting. The second appointment is usually a few days later, when we re-enter the tooth, clean and shape the canal system using the latest rotary endodontic systems, and fill the canal spaces with an inert filling material. A permanent filling is usually also done on top of it to bring the tooth into full function. Unlike popular urban myth, a ‘root canal’ is usually painless. We use sophisticated diagnostic and endodontic rotary systems to perform a root canal treatment, and are trained in advanced techniques to save teeth.
Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of most patients, there are a number of ways to whiten teeth. The most popular method is using a home tooth whitening system that will whiten teeth dramatically. Since tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the newly bleached teeth.
