Horizon Family Medicine, a fifteen family physician clinic, is a dynamic new family medical practice located in Red Deer and Sylvan Lake Alberta. Both clinics offer booked appointments, same day walk-in patient visits and a shared electronic medical record (EMR) database integrated with Alberta Netcare. From time to time, a limited number of Horizon physicians may be accepting new patients.

Horizon Family Medicine is a dynamic new family medical practice located on the main floor within downtown Red Deer’s Real Canadian Superstore. The clinic is now open and will provide booked patient appointments as well as same day drop in Walk-in patient visits. Clinic will be accepting new patients for a limited time.
Horizon Family Medicine focuses on overall patient health and is part of the Red Deer Primary Care Network. Our goal is to provide an excellent clinical patient experience and top quality healthcare services. We believe that access to family physician expertise is of importance as well as developing strong relationships with our patients. The clinic also utilizes a fully integrated electronic medical record (EMR) in order to best gather important medical history and provide a confidential medical record for our patients.

Dr. Katherine Atchison MD, CCFP, FCFP
Dr. Atchison was born and raised on a farm in southwest Saskatchewan. She graduated from medical school in Saskatoon (University of Saskatchewan) then completed a Family Medicine residency program at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary. She practiced in a small rural community in Montana for 3 years before moving to Red Deer in 1997, where she has been practicing since that time. As well as a full time family practice, Katherine is on the Sexual Assault Response Team. Katherine is married, has two sons and enjoys doing crafts, reading and gardening.
Dr. Mark Darby MD, MSc, CCFP
Dr. Darby was raised in a rural community west of Innisfail, Alberta. Dr. Darby attended the University of Calgary graduating in 2002. He received his undergraduate degree in Biology, his Masters Degree in Neuroscience and his Medical Degree. Through the University of Alberta Dr. Darby completed a Rural Family Medicine Residency, training mainly in the Red Deer region. For over 6 years he has been practicing Family Medicine in Red Deer.
Dr. Brian Dembinski BSc, MD, CCFP
Dr. Dembinski was raised in Edmonton, Alberta. He graduated from the University of Alberta after completing an undergraduate degree in Pharmacology, and a Doctor of Medicine Degree. Dr. Dembinski completed his medical residency training in the Family Medicine field through the University of Calgary, where he worked primarily from his home base in Medicine Hat and surrounding areas. Since completing residency he has locumed in Southern Alberta and recently made his home in Red Deer.
Dr. Emily Devereaux BSc, MD, CCFP
Dr. Devereaux was raised in Red Deer, Alberta. She graduated from the University of Calgary with a degree in Biological Sciences and her Doctor of Medicine. She returned to Red Deer for her medical residency through the Rural Alberta North Family Medicine Program at the University of Alberta. Dr. Devereaux is excited for the opportunity to practice family medicine in her home town.
Dr. Mandy Hyde BSc, MD, CCFP
Dr. Hyde was raised in Lacombe, Alberta. She graduated with an undergraduate degree in Biology from Canadian University College in Lacombe and then attended the University of Alberta in 2002 to receive her medical degree. In 2004 Dr. Hyde completed her medical residency through the Rural Alberta North Family Medicine Program based in Red Deer. She has been practicing family medicine in the Red Deer and surrounding area since completing her training. Dr. Hyde's special interest is in maternity care.
Dr. John Julyan-Gudgeon MSc, MD
Dr. Julyan-Gudgeon completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Calgary in Zoology. He holds a Masters Degree in Neuroscience and graduated from University of Alberta's medical school. In 2006 Dr. Julyan-Gudgeon completed his residence program in Family Medicine. He served as a physician for the Canadian Forces between 2006 and 2010. Now, he and his family call Red Deer, AB their home.
Dr. Nav Rattan BSc, MD, CCFP Dip Sport Medicine
Dr. Rattan was raised in Red Deer and attended the University of Alberta in Edmonton for his undergraduate Science Degree. He then went to San Francisco and Chicago to study Podiatric Medicine and Foot Surgery. Following that, he attended Medical School at the University of Calgary and completed Family Medicine training in Edmonton. He has been practising medicine in Red Deer for over 20 years focusing on Family Medicine, Sport Medicine, and providing consulting work in Foot Surgery, Athletic Injury, Foot Disorders, and Vasectomy Surgery.
Dr. John Ellis BSc, MD
Dr. Ellis was raised in Cape Town, South Africa. After completing high school, he spent some time in the military before completing a Bachelor's of Science and Medical Degree at Stellenbosch University. He practised medicine in Cape Town, doing family practice and Emergency Medicine. He arrived in Canada, working first in Saskatchewan before coming to Alberta. He has a strong interest in exercise as a preventative in modifiable diseases. Dr. Ellis has been practicing medicine in Red Deer for 11 years, with a focus on maternity care. He is excited to join the Horizon Team as of March 2014.
Martin Penninga (Business Manager)
Martin was raised in Kelowna, BC and completed his Bachelor of Business Administration Degree from Trinity Western University in 1995. Following graduation until 2004, he held administrative, management and finance positions at TWU, British Columbia Institute of Technology, and the University of Calgary. Over the last 7 years, he has co-owned and operated a local retail business and also managed the largest family medical clinic in Central Alberta.
