The cost of care

Wonder if you can afford to see a physiotherapist? You might be surprised to know how affordable it can be.

Let’s say you’ve suffered an injury, but don’t feel you have the cash to spend on physiotherapy treatments. Well, it’s time to stop worrying: a visit to the physiotherapist might cost less than you think.

First of all, though, it’s important to note some kinds of physiotherapy aren’t covered by your province’s health care plan. If you see one in a hospital clinic, your provincial health care plan may pay for either part or all of that service. However, much like other primary health care professionals (like dentists), physiotherapists working in private clinics may not be covered by provincial plans and instead charge a fee for service. Those fees will vary from province to province as well as with practice conditions. How much you’ll pay to see a physiotherapist will depend on the person you choose to see.

The good news is that according to the Canadian Physiotherapy Association, less than 10 per cent of patients pay the full cost of their care. Physiotherapy is covered by most extended benefits plans, and many providers cover either all or most of the cost of care.

Not only that, but many physiotherapists working in private practice can actually bill your health insurance provider directly – meaning he bills your provider and your provider pays him back directly. In some cases, you may not even have to hand over a dime after a treatment. And if your physiotherapist does have to bill you, you can usually submit her receipt to your insurance company and be reimbursed in a week or two.

And, if all else fails, remember your physiotherapist is a qualified health professional whose primary interest is restoring you to health. Be sure to speak to your physiotherapist about different payment options to see if you can find something that works with both your needs and your budget.
