Do you need a referral to see a physiotherapist? The answer might surprise you.

If you want to see a physiotherapist to help improve your mobility and overall health, you may wonder if you need a doctor’s referral to find one. The answer is a bit more complicated than you might think.
A physiotherapist is a primary health care professional, and in most cases, if you want to see one, you really don’t need a doctor’s referral to do so. According to the Canadian Physiotherapy Association, most Canadians who use the service of a physiotherapist do so by direct access – simply calling the physiotherapist and making an appointment without a referral.
That doesn’t sound very complicated. The issue, however, is when it comes to coverage. If you are in the hospital or require acute care from a physiotherapist (particularly if the service covered by your provincial health care plan), you may need a referral from a physician or another member of your health care team.
And while most extended benefits plans do cover the cost of physiotherapy, some plans require a physician’s referral to reimburse you for the services. So while the physiotherapist doesn’t require a referral, to get the visit covered by your benefits plan, you may still have to first talk to your family doctor and get him or her to refer you to someone.
If you’re looking for a physiotherapist and don’t need a referral, be sure to ask your family, friends and co-workers if they can recommend a good physiotherapist. Or, try doing an Internet search on Health Local to find a physiotherapist in your area. The physiotherapist’s Gold Listing or website will have information (including website links) to help you determine if that physiotherapist meets your needs.
