Garage sales are a great way to clear out clutter, make some money and even and enjoy a nice summer day of socializing with your neighbours and others. If you’re planning on having a garage sale this summer, then we’ve got tips to help you make it a real success so that you get the most possible from the experience.
Here are some tips to help you with your summer garage sale.
Tip #1 Get the Word Out
Long gone are the days when word of mouth and random hand-scribbled signs were the only way to get the word out about a garage sale. These days you have loads of options at your disposal, such as free online classifieds, free community newspapers, and more. Look to free classified sites like Craigslist and kijiji where you advertise your garage sale for free. The same goes with free local papers like Penny Saver. Create and print off eye-catching flyers and signs to post around your neighbourhood and at the local grocery store’s bulletin board. The more people you reach, the more money you stand to make!
Tip #2 Prepare for the Weather
Keep an eye on the forecast to try to ensure that your garage sale ends up on a sunny day, but remember that Mother Nature’s got her own plan sometimes and be prepared. Pick up plenty of tarps or even borrow canopies and tents from friends to have handy in case you get rain. Die hard pickers will come out rain or shine and being prepared with tents also makes it more likely that passers-by will take notice and be willing to stop since they won’t have to get quite so wet thanks to the provided shelter. And if you do luck out and have a very sunny day for your garage sale, have a beach umbrella or canopy for shade to protect yourself from burning or overheating while out in the sun hosting your sale.
Tip #3 Have Lots of Change
You can never pick up too much change for a garage sale! Having a lot of change ready for your sale will make things easier for you and those who stop to shop so that you can enjoy your garage sale and keep your stress level in check!
Tip #4 Make It Look Good
Just because it’s a yard sale doesn’t mean that it needs to look a mess! Display your items so that they’re easy to see and handle and place the big ticket items or those that are likely to grab attention near the front of your yard so those walking or driving by are more tempted to stop. Use tables and overturned crates to display your items and use a clothing rack to display clothes and linens if possible. And speaking of clothes and linens: make sure you wash them before putting them up for sale for hygienic and aesthetics.
Tip #5 Be a Good Host
The thing about summer garage sales is that you’re usually dealing with summer temperatures. If it’s hot out when you host your sale, offer shoppers bottles of water for free or a low price, like 50 cents or a dollar. It’s a nice touch on your part and it helps to keep you and your shoppers hydrated, which is crucial for your health on hot days. Another idea is to have your kids set up a lemonade stand. It’s so cute that passers-by won’t be able to resist and it also helps to keep your kids busy and out of the way while the sale is going on.
