Do personal products contain cancer causing chemicals?

Many hygiene products are loaded with carcinogenic compounds.

Yes, your bathroom is full of cancer causing agents. Did you know that over 90,000 toxic chemicals have been introduced into our environment since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution and it is estimated that over 80% of them are found in our homes!

Let’s use some preventative measures here and eliminate the easy ones from the household starting with the bathroom.

Hygiene products from shampoo to deordorants to facial cleansers and makeup are loaded with carcinogenic compounds. Note that just because it says it is “natural” does not make it safe! In fact, many natural plant compounds, when added together become carcinogenic.

Putting these chemicals on your skin can be more dangerous than eating them! Why?

You know your skin is your largest organ. Well it is also very vascularized – which means it has alot of blood vessels running through it – and all close to the surface. These chemicals go from the surface of the skin right into the your blood – no protection from the enzymes, hydrochloric acid, etc from your intestinal system.

There are thousands of chemicals utilized in personal care products, in fact, over 900 toxic chemicals in cosmetics alone! There are other articles that go through much more extensively what these different chemical groups are but here is a short list of some of the most common ones:

  • 1, 4-Dioane
  • Antibacterials
  • DEA (Diethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamine), TEA (Triethanolamine)
  • Formaldehyde
  • Hydroquinone
  • Imidazolidinyl & Diazolidinyl Urea
  • Lead
  • Mercury
  • Mineral oil, paraffin, petrolatum
  • Musks
  • Nano particles
  • Paraben (butyl, ethyl, methyl, propyl)
  • Phthalates (dibutyl phthalate (DBP), dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP))
  • Sodium lauryl sulfate

Because the cosmetic industry is not regulated, these items can be listed in different ways, and so it is sometimes difficult to determine what is really there. For instance, Quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, Imidazolidinyl urea, and Diazolidinyl urea may all contain formaldehyde.

These  products are know to cause problems like:

  • allergies
  • birth defects
  • cancer
  • chronic fatique
  • depression
  • headaches
  • hormonal disruptions
  • hyperactivity
  • irritability
  • learning disabilities
  • memory loss

There are many companies out there that claim to be “clean”, “organic” or “healthy” that are not. It becomes the consumer’s responsibility to do their research.
