Oral cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer, and it’s also one of the most preventable. At our clinic in Kelowna, BC, our dentists always recommend our patients start with a healthy diet when speaking to them about cancer prevention. Fruits and vegetables will act as antioxidants to help ward off disease. Eating cruciferous vegetables in particular—bok choy, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage—will help decrease your chances of developing mouth cancer.
If you’re a smoker, quit. Studies show smoking and using tobacco products significantly increases your chances of getting mouth cancer. Talk to your dentist or doctor about medication and tools you can use to help you quit. It’s also a good idea to limit how much alcohol you drink.
Finally, be mindful of the time your mouth is in the sun. It’s true—your lips and mouth are exposed to the sun and they’re also at risk of developing cancer. If you think you’ll be in the sun for a while, apply a lip balm that offers SPF 10 or higher.
