Kandis Lock, ND, Ottawa, Naturopath

Your Ottawa, Ontario Naturopathic Doctor

Dr. Kandis Lock, ND got her first taste of Naturopathic Medicine while studying traditional healing methods as an undergraduate at the University of Alberta. As an anthropology student she studied a variety of ancient healing practices from around the world. It was at the end of her undergrad that she realized that practicing these medicines, rather than studying them academically, was an inevitable course of action. These forms of medicine are her passion. Her therapies improve common acute ailments such as colds and flus, ear, nose and throat infections, urinary tract infections, diarrhea, constipation, cold store, shingles, herpes and sprains and strains. Services and Expertise

What to Expect

On your first visit Dr. Kandis Lock, ND will perform a careful and detailed assessment of your health status taking into consideration your current health, your medical history and your lifestyle.  Dr. Kandis will then do a brief screening physical exam and make a detailed health plan based on her findings.

A 30-45 minute follow up visit will generally follow in 3-4 weeks to allow you to implement our health strategy and notice any changes. If we decide that acupuncture is the route we are going to go, then weekly to bi-weekly treatments are the standard of care.

Dr. Lock’s therapies can treat common acute ailments including colds and flus, ear, nose and throat infections, respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, diarrhea, constipation, cold sores, shingles, herpes and strains and sprains. Chronic conditions such as allergies, skin problems, cancer, hypertension, diabetes, autoimmune diseases and thyroid gland disorders can also be treated with naturopathic medicine.

The naturopathic therapies begin with clinical nutrition. Dr. Kandis Lock Naturopathic Doctor points out that as the founding father of medicine, Hippocrates, said, “Let food be your medicine, and medicine be your food.” After a thorough examination of current nutrition and future nutritional needs, nutritional changes, dietary protocols and supplements are utilized to enhance and improve health. Foods are essential to health and well-being, and proper consumption can help meet particular objectives and treat particular conditions.

Naturopathic Therapies

Dr. Kandis is licensed in the following modalities:

Clinical nutrition

Hippocrates, the founding father or medicine said, “Let food be your medicine, and medicine be your food”. Foods are our building blocks and can be tailored to meet specific goals or to treat a specific illness. A nutritional assessment followed by modifications, dietary protocols and supplements are used to optimize your health.

Lifestyle counseling

The way in which we live our lives and the habits we can either positively or negatively affect our health. We look at time management, stress management and other life habits and assess whether they are working for or against you.

Botanical medicine

Plant medicines have been prescribed for thousands of years and are often the basis for current prescription medications. The difference is that using the whole herb is how this particular medicine was designed to work best, often with fewer side effects.

Testing

Dr. Kandis works with various professional laboratories including but not limited to Doctor’s Data, Gamma Dyna-Care, and Rocky Mountain Analytical to ensure that her patients receive high quality diagnostic tests.

Some common medical tests that she uses regularly are standard blood tests to assess cholesterol, diabetes, hormones, liver function, iron and vitamin B12 levels. In addition she uses urine tests to assess kidney health or for urinary tract infections.

Naturopathic medical diagnostic tests for adrenal gland function, environmental toxicity, digestive function, trace mineral levels, body composition, and food sensitivities are also used if Dr. Kandis deems this necessary for diagnosis and treatment.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a complete medical system that has been used to diagnose, treat and prevent illness for thousands of years. The aim of TCM is to promote the smooth flow of energy (or Qi), yin and yang, which when out of balance cause illness. By taking a detailed history of your symptoms, assessing the quality of your pulses and looking at your tongue, Dr. Kandis will come up with a Chinese Medical Diagnosis. Acupuncture, herbs and diet are used to treat.

Homeopathy

Homeopathy, as with other natural medicines, focuses on your physical and emotional symptoms. It is based on the principle of “like cures like” and uses minute amounts of natural substances to stimulate the self-healing abilities of the body.

Intravenous Therapy

The intravenous delivery of nutrients is a very safe and effective way to provide the body with therapeutic and nutritional agents. The advantage of IV therapy over taking oral doses is that the vitamins or nutrients bypass the digestive system and get delivered directly into the bloodstream and to the cells in the body.

In conditions where there is a poor absorption of nutrients orally, IV therapy can become a powerful tool. IV therapy allows for the patient to receive much higher doses than would ever be achieved orally, achieving a greater pharmacologic action. Each IV therapy is also tailored to meet the specific needs of the patient.

IV therapy is commonly used for the following (although is not limited to these conditions):

  • Acute infections (colds, flu’s, etc.)
  • Allergies
  • Asthma
  • Cancer
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn’s and Colitis) or IBS
  • Migraines
  • Neurological diseases (MS, Parkinson’s, Neuralgia, shingles, etc)
  • Recovery enhancement for athletes

IV is also used generally for balancing the immune system and increasing energy levels

IV vitamin therapy is a specialized treatment that can provide effective results that may not be found in other therapies. Dr. Lock, ND is licensed and board certified to practice IV therapy in Ontario.
