First visits to the dentist are recommended for children around the age of 3. Children who see a dentist from an early age are less likely to fear dental visits or develop cavities. Preventative screenings may be all that is required at such an early age; however, at this time, the Scarboro Smiles team is able to help counsel parents on feeding methods and thumb and finger habits that will help build healthy hygiene habits.
To get your child ready for their first visit, we suggest allowing your child to attend a hygiene visit with a parent or sibling to become familiar with the office and staff. It may also be helpful to encourage regular tooth care at home.
Orthodontics
Orthopaedics is when the size and shape of teeth are changed to achieve a beautiful, symmetrical smile. In addition to providing esthetic benefits, orthopaedics helps permanent teeth grow into their proper positions and may be able to reduce the need for braces and extractions later on in life or the amount of time necessary for one to wear braces. Although the orthopaedic process conducted is specific to each individual, it may include:
• development appliances to aid in jaw growth
• functional appliances to correct jaws that are growing improperly by working
with the growth of patients’ jaw and facial muscles
• orthodontic appliances to prevent the shifting of teeth; though this may not
be necessary
Invisalign® takes a modern approach to straightening teeth, using a custom-made series of aligners created for you and only you. These aligner trays are made of smooth, comfortable and virtually invisible plastic that you wear over your teeth. Wearing the aligners will gradually and gently shift your teeth into place, based on the exact movements we plans out for you. There are no metal brackets to attach and no wires to tighten. You just pop in a new set of aligners approximately every two weeks, until your treatment is complete. You’ll achieve a great smile with little interference in your daily life. The best part about the whole process is that most people won’t even know you’re straightening your teeth.
A crown is a type of dental restoration which is used to fully cover the portion of the tooth that lies above the gum line. Like most other dental restorations, crowns often require more than one visit to the dentist. However, with CEREC Crown technology, we are able to manufacture your crown right in our office, allowing us to completely restore your tooth in a single appointment, start to finis
Dentures are prosthetic teeth, made mostly of plastic, that replace missing or lost teeth. Dentures are usually a solution of last resort. Many people assume that they will need dentures as they age, but losing teeth is not a normal part of the aging process. If you care for your teeth well and guard against gum disease, you should be able to keep your teeth for a lifetime.
Dental implants are an excellent way to replace lost teeth, leaving your smile looking natural and healthy. Implants function, look and feel like real teeth! They provide stability, maintain jaw-bone density and keep the natural contours of your face. The implant itself is a titanium post inserted into the jaw bone, mimicking the root of your tooth. This provides a base for a prosthetic tooth, whether it is a crown, bridge or denture.
All of our cosmetic services are able to give you the tools you need to not only protect your smile and contribute to your overall dental hygiene and health; but to also give you the self confidence to look and feel your best! Some of these procedures include the following:
• Instant Orthodontics/Bonding
• Porcelain Bridges
• Porcelain Crowns
• Porcelain Veneers
• White Fillings
• Zoom Teeth Whitening
Endodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with diseases of the tooth’s pulp. The pulp is found in the center of the tooth and in canals (called root canals) inside the root of each tooth. Pulp includes connective tissue, nerves and blood vessels. Pulp nourishes the tooth when it first emerges through the gum. Once the tooth matures, the pulp can be removed without destroying the tooth. That’s because each tooth also is nourished by a blood supply in the gums.
Removing the pulp is called endodontic treatment, but it is often referred to as root canal treatment or root canal therapy. Root canal treatments are quite common.
Peridontitis is a serious oral disease that is characterized by destruction of the bone that holds the teeth in the mouth. Loss of bone means tooth mobility and possible tooth loss! Unlike gingivitis, periodontitis is irreversible. Bone loss can occur at a slow rate over many years, or it can occur very rapid resulting in tooth loss. The destructiveness of periodontal disease depends on the aggressiveness of the bacteria present, as well as the patient’s health and genetic factors.
There are a few risk factors:
• Genetics
• Smoking
• Diabetes
• Autoimmune Diseases
• Osteoporosis and Osteonecrosis
• Female Hormones (Pregnancy, Menstruation)
• Medications
• Vitamin C Deficiencies
The Periodontal Disease Process:
The American Academy of Periodontal Disease has created specific classifications for the different stages of periodontal disease.
