14 Bizarre ice-cream flavours

What screams summer more than sitting back and relaxing with some yummy ice-cream? Although ice cream is the favourite dessert of many, we’ve found some interesting flavours that might not be quite so appealing. Have a look at our top 14 unusual ice-cream flavours!

1. Chocolate Wasabi
Made by Amy’s ice-creams in Texas, this flavour has a lot of chocolate and a pinch of wasabi, but don’t be fooled, it’s still enough to make you feel like your tongue is on fire!

2. Peanut Butter & Jelly
A short-lived Ben & Jerry’s flavour, which works well as a sandwich filling but not so well as an ice-cream. 
3. Haggis
Now, this is plain wrong. Meat flavoured ice-cream is bad enough, but meat that’s made out of intestines ice-cream? If it still tempts you, pop over to Harrod’s in London to give it a go.

4. Octopus
This one’s just as bad as the last. A Japanese variation that fuses seafood and dairy in a frozen delight called Taco Aisu. Probably only worth eating as a dare.

5. Corn on the Cob
The above flavours might make corn-on-the-cob ice-cream seem positively normal. But it’s not. If you feel differently, it’s available from Max & Mina’s in Queens, New York.

6. Prosciutto
More meaty madness in this fusion of cured meat and ice-cream, with fennel made by Humphry Slocombe in San Francisco. One to avoid if you can’t stand fennel seeds…or meat-cream!

7. Schweddy Balls
Another controversial Ben & Jerry’s flavour, which is made up of seemingly reasonable ingredients (fudge covered rum balls and malt balls), but that name would put anyone off!

8. Garlic
As made by the Garlic Farm on the Isle of Wight, England. A pleasant taste of peaches that fades to a horrible lingering aftertaste of garlic. Why would you do that?!

9. Honey Lavender
One of the less radical ones on the list, but still an ice-cream that divides people.  It’s the lavender that’s off-putting. It probably tastes similar to eating creamy bubble bath.

10. Cow Tongue
Another bizarre Japanese offering, which was a big hit at the Yokohama Ice-cream Festival in 2008. According to one attendee, “We like strange-tasting food.” 

11. Exit Wound
If you have to undertake a test and sign a contract before you’re allowed to taste an ice-cream, something isn’t right. Customers who want to eat the chilli-laden “Exit Wound” ice-cream of Sunni Sky’s in Angier, North Carolina need to consume the slightly less spicy “Cold Sweat” first, and sign a waiver before tasting either one. Dangerous stuff!

12. Carrot Cake
Carrots work nicely in cake, but does carrot cake work in ice-cream? David Lebovtiz thinks so, with his candied-carrot recipe.

13. Parmesan
Gelato is lighter than other types of ice-cream and can be a lovely palate cleanser between courses. But maybe not if you infuse it with parmesan cheese!

14. Breastmilk ice-cream
The only ice-cream on our list to be subject to a lawsuit – made by the Icecreamists in Covent Garden, London this was made with human breastmilk and originally called “Baby Gaga” until Lady Gaga objected. Customers objected to the £20 price tag.
