We all get our bad days at work and sometimes when the going gets tough the tough get stressed out. Here are some ideas that you can use at your desk, in the lunchroom or while out for a quick walk to get the ohm back in your day. When you are being proactive, your everyday will be calm and you will love your work again.
We have all been there – getting that negative thought stuck in our head like a scratched record.
- Am I doing my job the “right way”?
- What does the boss think of me?
- Or the #1 office issue of “What are they whispering about?”
These little seeds that we have planted in our own brain bloom into a full blow freak out or worse you act on the freak out BADLY before taking the time to see the truth. Most of the time (in fact 99% of the time) it has nothing to do with us but the thoughts in our head create a reaction in our Healthy Body and then our Healthy Body has to let go of it somehow. If you were to catch yourself as soon as this thought pattern starts, then you could stop it right there. Get up and take a quick walk to change your thought, when we move our Healthy Body, we change our thoughts. Or you could make a tea, watch something funny on YouTube or have a chat with a co-worker. Just catch yourself and break that pattern now!
Changing Your Habits
We’ve all got little work habits that cause us stress. We all have things that we want to change, weather it is to stop snacking at our desk, or to be more prepared for meetings at work. We are in control of ourselves and I think a lot of us forget that. If you want to be more prepared for meeting, what would just one thing be that you could do to be more prepared? Show up early? Just change one thing for 2 weeks and this will be your new positive helpful habit. Do yourself a favor and work on one habit at a time. If you change to many things to fast, it is like going on a crash diet…you end up back where you were because it felt uncomfortable and uneasy. With just changing one thing, you are making changes gradually, this is a sure plan to change your life.
Eating healthy when you are stressed is the best thing you can do for yourself. When we are stressed, this is when we go for emotional eating. If you keep healthy high in protein snacks at your work this will help.
- Nuts like almonds or cashews
- Protein bars
- Single serve cottage cheese and fruit
- Hardboiled eggs
- Roasted chickpeas
- GORP – good old fashioned raisins and peanuts: a little bit sweet, a little bit salty – a lot of satisfaction!
If you go for something like a donut, chocolate bar or cookies, you are putting your Healthy Body into shock. It is already stressed and then you give it something that it has to work off and is harder to process. Give yourself a fighting chance and eat healthy. And while eating healthy is important, so is the amount of water you drink! If you’re feeling thirsty while reading this, you’re already dehydrated. Go get some water in your system!
This is one of the most common human conditionings. It is so easy to just put blame one someone else. Growing up, I had a whole bunch of siblings called, “Wasn’t me”, “I didn’t do it” and “I don’t know.” But we’re not 10 any more: if it was truly something that you made a mistake on, just say it was you and move on. Your boss or fellow coworkers will respect you for it. This is a great way to build trust and move away from what can become a really detrimental office atmosphere. Think about it, if you just own up and say sorry and fix the issue, the issue is over. But if you start pointing figures, it will turn into a firing match, and this is how office gossip starts. It is best to stay clear from all of it.
Don’t Be On the Defensive
Being on the defensive makes people uncomfortable and it makes you appear unapproachable. If they ask you about an email you were supposed to send, you do not have to go to high heaven to show them that you responded and how you responded and at what time and what you thought about it. A simple yes or no will work. Get it out of your head that people are attacking you all the time, this using up way to much energy. You are over working your nervous system, and this is turn can cause health issues down the road.
So break down your walls and smile instead of being on the defensive. Being on the defensive is not a nice place to be for you or the person on the receiving end.
Or could it be that you need to start working on believing in yourself just a bit more?
