How to engage meaningfully online is a problem that I think we all struggle with. I definitely find it challenging. There are so many different platforms out there to choose from and with each platform there is a different way to engage in a conversation. Tweet, post, link, forum, blog, follower…repeat! But why does it have to be so overwhelming? Well I am here to tell you that it does not. It is about finding your own system and what you are comfortable with.
Me? I am a LinkedIn, Pinterest, Facebook, blog kind of girl. So every Monday, I blog, tweet, pin and post though not always in that order. This system works well for me. When something comes up or someone asks me a question about marketing or yoga, I write it down and have it ready for when I need something to write about. This is a great way to get some topic flow and especially for those days when I do not feel like writing.
This is also how I start a conversation online. It is like putting 10 or more people in a room who are just staring at each other. You need to have some ice breakers and eventually, there will be a conversation. Not sure how to start? I use something called Healthy Mind Mapping. Trust me it works! Go right now and write down topics you are interested in and could write about. Then think about questions you’ve already been asked and write those down. Go on – I’ll wait! You’ll find quite quickly that you’ve got a great list to start conversations online and keep the conversation going.
Being online has to be an authentic experience for you. You can’t have conversations about topics that don’t fit your character or business. It would be really hard to keep that conversation going. Like the room of 10 people, it would be odd to have 10 people in a room and there be NO chatter. Start the conversation and get on line in YOUR meaningful way. Be passionate and let people know what is on your mind, what it is that you are passionate about, your work, your practice, and your favorite things. That authenticity will shine through and before you know it, the chatter will commence and the silent room will be a distant memory.
